Hi Oregon Eddy here, your emcee for all these tall tales of Nye Beach and the Newport Bayfront. Home base is the Gilmore Hotel. Some of the characters are admittedly biographical all the bald ones especially. After all, wasn t it the writer Max Schulman who named all his characters Max, saying, fie on false modesty?

Now, I admit that calling oneself Oregon Eddy or Oregon anybody in the midst of a million other Oregonians could be considered ostentatious, but I picked up that name when I lived in San Francisco.

But let me get back to introducing our setting....

Almost a century ago, the Gilmore Hotel was a landmark for luxurious living at Nye Beach in Newport, a small town on the Central Oregon Coast. By the 1960s, owner William (Bill) Robinson provided low-cost housing for fishing and service workers, and retirees. These are their stories from the Gilmore Hotel s last days told by one of its residents in the style of a graphic novel, with real and surreal texts and cartoons.

One more thing. In 1987, the Gilmore once again became an elegant destination resort when it was reborn as the world-class Sylvia Beach Hotel by two ladies named Gudrun (Goody) Cable and Sally Ford. They keep the old charm intact.

Well, that s enuff Intro let s jump into our story.

First, the cast and then their tales....

Gilmore by the Sea Ed Cameron 9781892076786 Books Reviews

The book was not very informative or funny. The cartoon drawings were weird and silly and the text was really incomplete and strange.
Gilmore By The Sea left me hungry for more. The little song at the end was just the right touch and nearly left this non-electronic reader w/ a tear in each eye... That doesn't happen very often. I was sorry to see it end. This is a book I will revisit often and next time (hopefully) by the sea.

I enjoyed everything about it. I liked the dual-format (hey, whaddya do when the author has talent in more than one artistic category?).

My wife & I are diehard Nye Beach fans. We spent an unforgettable Halloween Night commuting between the Sand Bar and Cafe Mundo enjoying both the local music and the local color (hey, Free Peanuts!).

For anyone who remembers The Gilmore, Don Petrie's or Jump-Off Joe - Slouch on in!
For many years Newport, Oregon, has been a secluded little hive of wild honey, a place where creative artists, fishermen and loggers shared a lovely seaport town. Ed Cameron, a lifelong student of the Beats and alternative culture,.moved north from California in the days when the shabby old Gilmore hotel was at the center of it all. He knows everyone and more secrets than he can tell, and he himself occupied the favored little room-with-view that is now named for "Colette" in the Sylvia Beach's pantheon of world authors.

This "graphic novel" is a joy of recollection, a loving portrait of the place and times when cold salt air and warm friendships became a rich and swirling petri dish of creative culture. Cameron's self-deprecating inclusion of himself as the baldheaded "Patch" and "Balzac" dates back to his widely-loved cartoons of twenty and thirty years ago. He is an artist who gives generously of himself. I was lucky to be there looking in and now to have this book in my hands.

--John Chrisman
I had a difficult time with this book. It was almost impossible to follow as it seemed thrown together at odd angles, and with very little thought or evidence for some of the scenarios. As an example, the story about the dog pound was so far from the truth that it prompted me to write this review.
The cartoon stories were almost verbatim to the actual stories that were written, which made it repetitious and annoying. This left me wondering if the author was paid by the word.
The few colorful, interesting characters that were mentioned were only given a nod, with their true appeal left to the imagination. There were many standout people and goings on at the Gilmore that could have made this an interesting read. Unfortunately, the book lacked the true grit of the life and times of the Gilmore. It came off as a hazy conglomeration of a few moments in time that may have been accurate as far as the author's memory serves him, but as a whole, not the Gilmore I knew.
I enjoyed this very much. I remember seeing this house above Nye beach all my life and wondering what it was and then a few years ago my SO and I stayed there, at what is in 2017 the very lovely Sylvia Beach Hotel. Getting to read this memoir of some of the building's days has been a treat. I hope to be able to take my family back there.
I had high hopes for this book. A nostalgic insight into a by-gone era. I was hoping for a novel with absorbing characters perhaps reminiscent of friends i knew and left behind. As a minimum, i expected a story i could settle into and share the many and rich details of lives in the old hotel. Instead , for $15.00,i got a book somewhat reminiscent of another 60's style book "Be Here Now". Gilmore by The Sea, like the Be Here Now opus, was an elaborate comic , albeit without a hippylosophy. The characters were colorful in a two dimensional way but certainly not absorbing. The details that flesh out any story were sprinkled on in a miserly , measured fashion. The novel wasted a lot of space by telling each chapter comic book style and then describing each comic frame with a few more words. The two to three page chapters were over before they began. The most in depth section was the back of the cover. The book takes about 30 minutes to read and 60 seconds to forget.
