Very different from the movie but that mars it an entertaining read...initially. After a while both Jerry and Pookie were getting on my nerves, neither were likable characters. Something which really bothered me were two racist references. To me the comments were unnecessary, they added nothing to the story or the character development. Makes me wonder if the author is racist and was interjecting his own personal feelings into his writing. The remarks were so out of no where I found myself disliking the book.

The movie was better. Pookie Adams, the main character, is extremely annoying.
Not being a USA citizen it was really difficult for me to understand the story. I was flabberghasted at some passages. But in the end I'd guess it is a reminder of how off-track adolescents may be during this difficult period of life.
