Just finished a great read. Petra, City of Stone by T.L. Higley. Here is superb Biblical fiction (A.D. 106) that captures the imagination and drags you through a story line that will tantalize, delight and even raise the hair on your neck a time or two. Here's a story of a young heroine (Cassia) trapped in an abusive marriage, forced to lie, cheat and steal to keep her husband in booze.Petra, City of Stone (I hope that doesn't sound too familiar.) When she manages to escape, to Petra, she taken advantage of and left on the street to die. But, and this is the beginning of the good news, she is discovered and whisked away to the home of a believer who's family and friends nurture her back to health. Yes, there's a hero - a man torn between a forgotten faith and humiliating defeat.

Here's the thing, Cassia knows her son is a bona fide heir to the throne of Petra. What she doesn't know is the rulers of Petra are steeped in devil worship, and the queen is none to interested in a rival to her own son's claim to the kingdom. A Holy war ensues mixed with romance, betrayal and a stubborn spirit in more than one dimension.

Petra City in Stone T L Higley 9781433668562 Books Reviews

Great book!
Enjoyable read.
T.L. Higley has been one of my favorite Christian authors since I read Fall From Babel several years ago. Her books all have ancient settings, which makes them particularly appealing to me. And I like the fact that her settings are varied -- Babylon, Rhodes, Egypt, Alexandria, Petra -- and not the same old "usual" settings for ancient Christian fiction of Rome and/or Judea.

Higley's books are action- and plot-driven; she is a master at painting her main characters into the proverbial corner, and then extricating them by means of an exciting, hair-of-their-teeth escape (and often there is more than one such episode in her books). Her descriptions of ancient places and buildings are detailed enough to make you feel you are really there.

Higley's books don't tap much into emotion -- she develops her characters just enough so that you understand who they are and how they got where they are, and to make you want them to make it through their struggle. Her books always wrap up with a nice ending and when you finish a T.L. Higley book you will know you have been entertained by a good writer, though there won't be an ache in your heart or a tear in your eye.

However, even given all of the above and the fact that I don't read T.L. Higley's books expecting to be emotionally moved, even still her latest book Petra was hugely disappointing. It probably didn't help that I just finished a wonderful, 800-page saga that was thorough in its character development; probably almost anything I read after that would suffer by comparison. However, the best way I can describe Petra is that I felt like I was watching two young girls playing Barbie dolls; that is, they decide what they want their "characters" to do and have them do it, without regard to logic or reason. And the characters themselves reminded me somewhat of Barbie dolls, in that they seemed to be lacking in emotion. We're told that they felt a certain way, but we're never made to feel that they felt that way. Petra was filled with characters doing things that seemed totally implausible; and with no background or "explanation" given, I was never convinced. I started to give examples here and realized there were too many and this review would go on and on and on. So suffice it to say that the actions of the characters -- practically all of them -- were shallow, nonchalant, and superficial. The character of Hagiru -- who was the evil malefactor -- was the only one whose behavior and motivations made sense and were convincing. Then there were a couple of things -- Cassia's ability to "read" people and the never-explained source of Malik's wealth -- that seemed to be thrown in as nothing more than "teasers", since they were never explained and really weren't necessary to the story.

The romantic element in Petra was way too predictable. It was obvious by page 10 that Julian and Cassia would end up together. Although Higley did put a slight twist on the overused barbarian-Roman-falls-in-love-with-Christian-girl plot, by making the Roman a Christian and the girl a pagan.

One thing I did like about Petra better than Higley's previous books, was the climactic battle between Good and Evil. All of Higley's protagonists face evil from some source, but in this book it is much more primal and central to the book. Another thing different about Petra from Higley's previous books is that this one is set in AD rather than BC, which means that it involves Christians in the modern sense. I have read a few fiction books about early believers (followers of "The Way" as they are usually called), and I generally don't care for how authors handle them. In trying to show the early Christians as different from the others around them, they somehow end up coming off as a little too goody-goody and not "real." Although Higley did somewhat better in this regard than other authors I have read, still the behavior, attitudes and actions of the Christians in Petra seemed a little too sugar-coated to be authentic.

Higley has interrupted her series set in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World to begin this new series set in ancient cities, of which Petra is the first. I hope that her next installment will show more of the quality of her previous works. Although Petra is a fast read, in this instance that is not a good thing -- it read fast because there wasn't much there. It felt almost as though Higley wrote it in a rush. I hope that in her future books, she will take more time to better develop her characters.

I haven't yet decided whether Petra will be a keeper and, although I intend to read the next in this series, which is set in Pompeii, I may wait for it to come out at the library rather than buy it.
I have read several of T.L. Higley's books and this was one of her best so far! I ordered it, got prompt delivery & book was in perfect condition. I couldn't put it down..wonderful storyline. I even lent it to my daughter and she loved it as well. Thank you for another wonderful book.
This is one of those books that I will lend out with the hope it is returned to me. I enjoyed the historical information in this book as much as I enjoyed the inspiring story line. I believe I have read everything the T.L. Higley has written and enjoyed them all, but this one was my favorite. I rarely reread a book but I will reread this one.
This book was bought as a gift for someone they seem to be happy with the book, we are happy with how fast it was shipped to us. thank you
We visited Jordan and had the amazing experience of visiting Petra in 2012...this brings this deserted city to life. Chapter 6 lets you re-experience the 45 minute walk from the current city down the siq into the ancient city and beyond...what a wonderful way to get to revisit such a magical place. Add to this a visit to Wadi Rum and a night in a tent out on the desert and your experience will be complete.
