Grade: DMaggie is still recovering from a car accident that left her leg permanently damaged. Caleb is just out of juvey for causing that accident, drunk driving and leaving the scene of that accident. Next door neighbors, Maggie wants nothing to do with her former crush, the brother of her former best friend. All Maggie wants to do is run away for a semester abroad, while all Caleb wants is to fit back into their small town, Paradise, and keep the secrets of the accident from coming out.
Told in alternating chapters in Maggie's and Caleb's POVs, I enjoyed Simone Elkeles' writing style, although the voices between the characters weren't distinguishable. I wasn't immersed into the writing or characters and could LEAVING PARADISE was a book written for teens by an adult, rather than feeling like I were reading the voices of teens. I thought most of the characters were cliche and underdeveloped and was annoyed with Maggie feeling so sorry for herself. The minor characters were one dimensional and not unique. The plot felt similar to some I'd either read or watched on TV. I didn't like how the teens were portrayed as shallow and unkind to Maggie, yes teens can be mean, but they can also be empathic, especially to a classmate like Maggie who missed a year of school following an accident.
LEAVING PARADISE is a predictable story with an unsatisfactory ending.

My Thoughts Wow! Wow! Wow! As you may have noticed I'm a huge Elkeles fan! I adored The How To Series and this was just as great! We meet Maggie who was hit by a car driven by Caleb. Maggie has always had a thing for Caleb and of course Caleb was too blind to really notice her. She was his twin sister's best friend and the girl next door. Caleb was popular, hot, and had the girlfriend everybody wanted. One night during a party Maggie was at the wrong place at the wrong time and all bets were off. Ever since that night, Maggie has suffered. She has a limp now and had to spend months in recovery trying to get past the accident and still has the scars to remind her. Caleb had spent the last year in juvie trying to make up for his sins.
Caleb and Maggie get back out in the real world, school, work, and just basic life. They are bound to run into each other. Maybe even more than they realize. Nobody really understands what either of them has gone through and because of this, their relationships with other people are hurt.
I really loved this book. Love is an understatement here. I can't wait to read Return To Paradise. I instantly fell in love with Caleb, maybe it was his tough outer-shell but I knew deep down he had to be a sweetheart. Caleb, his having spent time in jail appealed to me even more because he had that bad boy aroma that I always tend to like. I also really liked Maggie, there was something soft about her that made her a wonderful character. Throw in all the side characters and Leaving Paradise is a real winner and a treat to read.
Overall Loved it. From the first page I was instantly hooked, and stayed up way past my bedtime to keep reading. The attic scene was sweet! If you haven't picked this book up, run out and buy it now!
What I'd Give It
5 cupcakes all the way!
Cover Really like it a lot. I like the hand holding and the tattoo on his arm. Totally fits the book.
I loved this book! I loved the characters, the storyline, just everything about it was awesome! I liked how these 2 characters came together. I felt for Maggie. I could only imagine what it must have felt like to have classmates make fun of her, not being able to play tennis anymore, her whole life has changed. Kendra & her posse just pissed me off. I wanted to jump into this book & punch them all for Maggie. When this book ended I was sad. Now I can't wait until the second book in the series arrives in my mailbox because I cannot wait to dive into it & see what happens & where these characters end up! It's a great story & has a great message behind it. Definitely check it out if you haven't already!
Found this book slightly unsatisfactory. One of those annoying books you read and are annoyed by how things turned out because it didn't feel finished to me. The first book started off okay than story builds and suddenly everything comes to a screeching halt as incident after incident happen and you're left feeling annoyed and pissed off. Second book just seemed like a brush off and in a hurry to finish the story. Things seemed all over the place for me and though it's not always necessary that loose ends get tied up, this book had more than necessary. I know it's fiction but does this really happen? Within a two year period there have been so many up and downs I feel like I went hours on a roller coaster with no stop. I don't know... Just confused and unhappy with how thing turned out. Wasn't as good as I was expecting after her other books.
