I think I would give it 3 1/2 stars. I am a Moyes fan, but this definitely was not her best. I have read several of her books and sometimes they start slowly but once into it, they move along. This one took at least the first 150 pages before it started to hold my interest. The first part was slow moving, tedious and full of uninteresting minutia regarding Jennifer's life with her friends and husband. The so called friends were not characters that I cared about. Sometimes it was hard to follow who was married to who but I really didn't care. I actually did not get into the book until about the last 200 pages which were the best. If you are a Moyes fan and want to read this book, that's fine, but don't expect it to be of the same caliber as Me Before You or After You. Of course, this is my opinion and I see from other reviews that many would not agree with me.

This is the 3rd book I've read written by JoJo Moyes and is by far one of the best writers out there in romance. The type of romance writing is very different from what is flooding the market right now. This is not some silly piece of fluff but a well thought out story with developed characters. By the way, I do like the silly type of romance book too but this is just so much more. What JoJo does incredibly well is bring you to the time and place of the story and make you feel like you are in that time and place with the characters. This story primarily is about the 1960's in London society and I felt I was taken to a different time. Very few authors are able to do this effectively. The Last Letter from Your Lover is a great book but probably my least favorite of the three I have read. The romance romance between Jennifer and Anthony was a bit of a stretch for me. However, that issue was what present time Ellie was looking into for her newspaper story. How has loved changed and how would we communicate differently now letters versus our electronic world we live in. Overall, a great read and I would highly recommend.
This is a story that could have been fanstastic, could have swept me away and had me begging for more. Instead it rambled, it jolted and it annoyed.
The plot is see through and the characters are annoying to say the least. This book kept coming up as number one on my recommended list and I cannot understand why.
Ellie is a 32 year old woman having an affair with a married man, working as a journalist for a paper who is moving premises and she stumbles across a love letter from 40 years earlier in the archives. We suddenly jump back to hear the story of the love letter but the time lines are skewed and so trying to figure out which Jennifer we are with is confusing to say the least and I found it hindered me getting into the book. The last half of the book was a little better although trite and predictable and fluffy.
The book has spelling mistakes (which is a pet hate of mine) and sloppy editing. I felt like I never got to know the characters well and nearly all of them were not that interesting. People were introduced for no other purpose than to fill pages it seemed.
I felt that this book had the promise of something far greater. The idea of two affairs happening 40 years apart from one another and connecting two women was a great premise, however it really failed to deliver. Having to be told third person how much the letters were affecting Ellie was a sign that she was not fleshed out enough and not even honest enough to us hearing her voice for ourselves.
Interesting look at South African politics in the 60's (which I felt was an unecessary rant in the book) and also into the business of asbestos in the same time period (this I felt was a great add to the book and should have been explored more rather than trying to cover too many aspects in brief detail).
I love books that jump between past and present and that have mystery and a love story at their heart - but it seems it is a hard task to pull of well and this is a novel that does not weave magic.
I have read other Jojo Moyes books and this one fell short for me. A good story, a lovely idea, but somehow it just does not deliver.
I've read two other books from this author, and really enjoyed them. This one? Not so much. If my "reading time" is like visiting with friends, then this was a very dull visit. Very slow, not very engaging, and frankly a bit boring. The other two books of her's that I've read, while essentially about love, were not "Romance Novels" per sei. Romance is not a genre I find particularly appealing, so maybe I'm biased.

There were some interesting plot twists here, some good writing, but the characters really did not ever "pop out" as interesting, at least not interesting enough to carry the story. Jennifer reminded me of Betty Draper, from "Mad Men" -- Not particularly relate-able, or likable. And "Boot," a divorced player, who loves to seduce married woman, who in just a few brief encounters finds the love of his life, a reason to change his ways? Writes her these incredibly romantic love letters? Lust maybe, but enduring, epic love does not happen this way--I just don't buy it. Unless some of the courtship got edited out.

The abrupt shift in the last third, introducing new characters to essentially provide the reader with an epilogue was unnecessarily distracting, as was the jumping around in time. Again, it may have been a genre issue for me.
This is a wonderful story. I felt caught up in the 1960s and the realistic portrayal of the social, political and business climates of the day. The side story of the unrest during the Congo's fight for independence had me interested enough to do some extra reading on what happened there.

Unlike some of the other reviewers I never had a problem with the timeline jumps and was invested in all the characters. The plot line that takes place forty years later is completely necessary to bring the original story to it's conclusion.

**Spoiler Alert** The only thing that wasn't clear to me was how Laurence Stirling knew about the P.O. box and was able to get his secretary to remove letters from it. Even after reading the book twice I still never picked that up. Any suggestions?
