Vengeance Is Sacred Peter Healy Books
The work has lot of potential and will gain from further line editing. It is set in a time 1900 to 1911 which depicts the early immigrant life, insecurities and working environment, trade unions and strikes of the time in New Jersey/ New York. In this historical fiction the male protagonist, Paolo Calefati, an Italian farmer, leaves Italy for a better future in America. He builds a new destiny and love connection, he strives to enter the job market and has nightmarish encounters. He has a connection with nature to rise to a universe of higher good. He is pursued by violence and vengeance through the gangs, camorra in Italy and mafia in NJ.
We see how honesty meets vengeance and the impact of the experiences which play out emotionally. The aura of good or the special gift of Deva in him, is brought down by violence. The burden of guilt influences life where Grandpa the carrier of Deva appears as an apparition: “We are Devas, not saints.” is the message. Paolo uses the Amanita seeds to counter misfortune. The Deva legacy must endure! Will Calefati find peace and love. There were so many deaths in the Triangle tragedy (1911).
The author’s research in the paranormal is evident in the well described passages relating to the Deva, that is, a celestial form of human being with supernatural powers. Connecting that with historical facts, at some points, the narration takes the form of a text book. The descriptions are nevertheless rich and worth reading. At some points, the aura of good is brought down by violent language of the protagonists.
Maria huffed with impatience. “Listen Paolo, you know that it was your Deva ways that warned you, but everything else came from yourself. It was your own courage driving you! So please, give yourself some well-deserved credit."
As a reviewer I found myself wondering why there is a lack of smoothness, coherence and interconnectedness with the historical facts. I did not find the language of the time (1900’s) and Italian nuances to the conversations, and characters present, representative. The special spiritual drive, the Deva, in Paolo Calefati, and his experiences, were they authentic and in line with timeline, and his spirituality? I enjoyed descriptions relating to his connectivity to nature, but need answers why vengeance is sacred? The two poles: vengeance and honesty play out. Do not tread on vengeance!
Excerpt:
“Neco would be delighted that Calefati was finally out of the hospital and they wouldn’t have to prolong their stay. Soon enough, Neco would reap his revenge and strangle the p... out of Paolo and his wh... of a girlfriend. Only then would Lembo be “paid in full,” and the Del Vecchios would elevate the prestige of retaliation to a new level of promise. Indeed, vengeance is sacred!”

Vengeance Is Sacred Peter Healy Books Reviews
“Destiny and Fate are the brothers of the future’, reflected Paolo, ‘but sometimes you must initiate.”’
The time is the 1900’s and young Paolo Calefati comes from a long line of farmers, who have crafted their trade within the hills of the mountainous village of San Vito. As a thirteen-year-old boy, his grandfather passed onto him the family legacy of the Deva before his death. Paolo’s thoughts have always been to remain with his family, cultivating the family business and using his gift. However, that all changes when he kills the head of the crime syndicate Donte DelVecchio’s son Lembo for the attempted rape and death of the woman Paolo loves. With a price on his head, his father knows there is no other choice except to send the now twenty-one-year-old Paolo to L’America to escape the fate of death.
What an amazing tale rich with historical detail and depth during a time of Italian life, immigration at Ellis Island, the New York City Garment Strike and the fire at the Triangle Waist Company. Woven within the history, lies paranormal, love, revenge and family roots that creates a lasting novel that is not to be forgotten. Healy has a way with words that draws his readers into the depths of his characters’ souls, allowing us to feel each emotionally charged revelation. Young Paolo is a believable character as we trace history though his young eyes. I thoroughly enjoyed this gripping tale of the telling of history and vengeance. Highly emotional, historically charged must read.
This book is a historical romance set at the beginning of the twentieth century, with a touch of the supernatural. Paolo is a young farmer at the back of Naples, he gets offside with the Camorra, and he has to flee to the US, more or less settling in New Jersey, after having most of his money swindled out of him by the immigration officers on Ellis Island. However, he knows only too well that the Camorra will not leave him alone if they can find him, and crime and the eastern US at the time seemed made for each other. The supernatural part is that he is a Deva, a man with the ability to commune with nature, sometimes see the future, and sometimes heal people. When things are at a bottom, he helps Augie who is being attacked by an Irish gang, and finds Augie is part of the Black Hand. He meets Maria, which leads to the romance, and he gets to see the exploitation of the poor, the start of unions, and some other historical aspects, including the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire of 1911.
The book is clearly written, but it is heavy on description and introspection, with a lot of exploration of feelings. In my opinion, this was overdone, and at times it drags a little. I have no idea of whether the historical parts are correct, but there are some treatments of injuries where the medical parts will, in my opinion, be wrong for the period. The worst example was the use of antibiotics. Sorry, but they were not developed for another 30 plus years. There are also sections where Paolo "explains" his Deva powers "scientifically". This is OK as long as you read it in terms of someone grasping and not really knowing; do not read it as being scientific. Overall, the book is certainly interesting, and casts an interesting light on life of the new immigrants in New York at the time.
